Saylor Family Scholarship

The Saylor Family scholarship was established to support post-secondary education for high school seniors who have faced significant life challenges. To be eligible for this scholarship award, the applicants must successfully complete the requirements and be awarded a high school diploma from any diploma granting program operated by the Davis Joint Unified School District or the Winters Joint Unified School District.

The focus of this scholarship is to provide support for promising students who have experienced significant life challenges, including but not limited to foster care, death of a family member during high school years or other family trauma, teen parenthood, behavioral health challenges, involvement with the juvenile justice system, or financial needs that resulted in the student working during high school.

We believe that young people are resilient and that every person blossoms at different times and in different ways. Life circumstances sometimes present significant challenges and can hinder young people in pursuit of their maximum potential. We believe that even a single act of encouragement can open doors of opportunity for a lifetime. Because of the focus of this scholarship there will be an emphasis on applicant essays and two recommendation letters from teachers, service providers, or other adults who have had significant contact with the applicants. We encourage these adults to identify potential applicants and support them through the application process and the completion of their graduation requirements.

Eligibility Requirements

• Must be a high school senior
• Must successfully complete the requirements and be awarded a high school diploma from any diploma granting program operated by the Davis Joint Unified School District or the Winters Joint Unified School District
• Must have experienced significant life challenges, including but not limited to foster care, death of a family member during high school years or other family trauma, teen parenthood, behavioral health challenges, involvement with the juvenile justice system, or financial needs that resulted in working during high school
• Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
• Plan to attend a Two-year community college or Four-year college/university or Vocational/Trade School in the upcoming academic year
• Demonstrate financial need (preference will go to students whose expected family contribution EFC is less than $10,000)
• Full time enrollment in 12 units or more is required during the academic year

The scholarship is renewable. Applicants must reapply to be considered for a renewal award and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Scholarship award may be used for tuition, fees, books and educational supplies.
